“I was intrigued by Pierre Balmain’s use of leopard-skin prints in the late forties and early sixties. Once I started playing with different patterns and African influences, though, my thoughts kept going to the beautiful work of Peter Beard and, in particular, to images of his stunning discovery on the streets of Nairobi: Iman. Channeling her amazing beauty and regal self-assurance helped me translate those archival prints into something for today’s Balmain woman, whom I see as a strong, self-assured, ‘urban warrior."
